Within the image of the state are the letters "N" and "C", with a 5-point star separating the letters. The custom state image has seventeen edges, which symbolizes the seventeen constituent institutions that comprise the "UNC System" and represents the UNC System's collective service to the state of North Carolina. On the top part of the logo, "THE UNC SYSTEM" is displayed in alignment with the custom state image. The words are in capital letters and are stacked on top of each other in two rows.
